Micro-credentials in a Minute Episode 5: Do We Like the Word “Currency”?
Robert Bajor: hi, my name is Rob.
Sheryl Grant: And my name is Sheryl and we are micro-credential and digital badge experts.
Robert Bajor: Today, we're going to talk about what we like and don't like about the word currency.
Sheryl Grant: I got to say, I don't like the word I use it. I use it a lot. I use it and I listen to other people and I don't say anything about it, but I don't really like the word currency. I don't think that what we're doing is really currency. I prefer the word proxy. I think what we're doing is recreating good proxies.
And that's the question about how to do this well? How do you create good proxies that are higher resolution and better than a transcript or a resume?
Robert Bajor: Yeah, I like that a lot. Actually it reminds me of Todd Rose's book, but we'll discuss that on another day. Um, so I really like the word currency. I like it a lot and I use it as frequently as I possibly can. And on an explicit level, a word like currency holds a lot of weight and it legitimizes micro-credentials. People hear the word currency and they think that it has value and a little bit on a psychological level.
But in practical terms, I think currency is also a good word because credentials literally have market value that's commensurate with what they can be exchanged for. So for example, a job opportunity or a promotion can be unlocked by earning maybe one or more micro-credentials digital badges, degrees, diplomas, everything. So I think when I use the word currency, you know, it just kind of connects those two things together.
